Local Resources for Food Aid

Women, Infants & Children (WIC) - A federally funded nutrition program for low-to-moderate income pregnant, postpartum, and lactating people, infants and children to the age of five years who are at nutritional risk. WIC is unique in that it provides specific supplemental nutritious foods and nutrition education to a specific target population as an adjunct to ongoing health care. The purpose of the WIC program is to prevent health problems and to improve the health of program participants during critical times of growth and development.

Breastfeeding support and information is available to all WIC Program participants at the numbers listed below. After hours assistance is also available via The Breast Start Helpline: 1-855-855-MILK (6455). WIC Program participants may be eligible to borrow hospital grade electric breast pumps, contact them for more information.

Services are provided at 9 sites throughout Mendocino County. There are fixed-base offices in Ukiah, Willits and Ft. Bragg and staff travel to outlying clinics in Pt. Arena, Boonville, Covelo, Laytonville, and Gualala monthly or bi-monthly. In addition, there is also an office at Consolidated Tribal Health Project. Please call their office for more information and/or to schedule an appointment.

The WIC Program not only improves the health of the WIC participants, but also helps the local economy by the spending of the vouchers for specific nutritious foods at local markets. In 2014, over 2 million federal dollars were infused into the local economy as the participants spent the vouchers at local stores.
